February 13: “Where do we Find Truth?” by Johnna Warden

Gen. 1:1 “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”
John 1:1 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”

In our culture today, where we can say and be anything we want, is there such a thing as absolute truth? And how do we know that our truth is The Truth?

As Christians, our world view must be shaped by what we profess when we receive Jesus as our Lord. If our world view is not shaped by the Word of God, then as James says in the book of James chapter 1, “We are as unstable as a surging sea tossed by the wind. We are unstable in our thoughts and beliefs and our actions are sure to follow.”

To establish what we as Christians believe to be true, we must go back to the beginning of Scripture. In Genesis 1:1 God is introduced as being present in the beginning, before anything existed, He was, He is, and He will forever be the source of all things. He caused everything that exists to exist. By His Word
it came to be. In the book of John, John carries this thread forward into the New Testament with His introduction to Jesus. John uses the same language as Genesis 1 in describing Jesus, “In the beginning, was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning and all things were created through Him.” And in John 1:14 John testifies that in the person of Jesus, “The Word became flesh and He dwelt among us. We observed His glory, the glory as the one and only Son of the Father, full of grace and truth.”

As followers of Jesus Christ, Genesis 1:1 is our origin, our beginning. Before we go any further in the discussion of truth, it must be determined that God exists, He is the uncaused source that caused everything to exist. He existed before His creation, and He will exist after His creation perishes. He exists as a triune God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Bible is one overarching narrative about God and His plan for humanity and His desire to dwell among His people in restored fellowship. God’s perfect plan was disrupted by man’s sinful act of disobedience, in Genesis 3. The rest of the Bible narrative is about God’s plan for rescue, redemption, and restoration of His creation. This overarching story of redemption gives meaning and purpose to our lives.

Have you settled in your heart that God is who He says He is? Has He come to dwell with you? Does what God says to determine what you believe?

Precious Father, thank You that You are. You have no beginning and no end. You are everlasting to everlasting. The source of all things past, present, and things to come. In You all truth and wisdom can be found. You are the truth. Amen.
